Legislation: Shorter Transfer Windows for Track & Cross Country

Division I track and cross country could be getting much shorter Transfer Portal windows. On September 2, the NCAA Track and Field and Cross Country Oversight Committee advanced a proposal that would give athletes just two opportunities each year to enter the portal: a 15-day window after the NCAA Cross Country Championships and a 10-day window after the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. This is still a proposal and still needs Division I Cabinet approval, but if adopted, it would replace the current system of multiple transfer windows across cross country, indoor track, and outdoor track.

Why the change? Track and cross country athletes currently have more transfer windows and more total days to enter the portal than athletes in any other Division I sport. The NCAA is trying to simplify that system, improve roster stability, and keep transfer decisions from overlapping with championship competition. For recruiting families, the bigger takeaway is that coaches may have clearer points in the year when they know who is staying, who is leaving, and where they actually have roster needs.
